Could Your Home Be Affecting Your Hormones? A Guide for After 45

Your body processes everything it meets, every day. What body burden means, where to look first, and how to lighten the load with 1 small swap at a time.

Could Your Home Be Affecting Your Hormones? A Guide for After 45

When women come to see me, they often think the problem is simply menopause.

They tell me they’re tired all the time. They wake at 3 in the morning. They’ve put on weight around their middle without changing how they eat. Their mood feels different. Their energy isn’t what it used to be.

And yes, hormones change.

But here’s the question I often ask:

Your hormones are also responding to the thousands of small choices you make every single day.

The food you eat.

The products you clean your home with.

The creams you put on your skin.

The perfume you wear.

The candles you burn.

The air fresheners you spray.

None of these things, on their own, are likely to be the reason you’re not feeling your best. But together they create what is often called your body burden. The ingredients behind it have a name that researchers use, endocrine disruptors, substances that get in the way of how your hormones do their work. Silent Spring Institute, a nonprofit research group, puts it plainly: “You can find them in cosmetics, furniture, cookware, and plastic food and drink containers.” Your body is constantly working to process everything it comes into contact with, and after 45, supporting those natural processes becomes even more important. It is one of the reasons women feel off while every test comes back fine.

The good news?

You don’t have to throw everything away and start again.

Healthy longevity is built through small, consistent changes.

Let’s start where it matters most.

Your bathroom: The first place I would look

Think about your morning routine.

Before you’ve even had breakfast, you’ve probably used shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, moisturiser, toothpaste, makeup and perhaps perfume.

Your skin is your largest organ, and what you put on it matters.

I’m not suggesting you panic over every ingredient, but I do encourage women to become more curious. Read the labels. Ask questions. Replace one product at a time with something cleaner.

One of the reasons I love the doTERRA Personal Care range is that it combines plant-based ingredients with pure essential oils, helping you simplify your routine without relying on unnecessary synthetic fragrances.

Small swaps really do add up.

A healthier kitchen starts with simplicity

The kitchen is another wonderful place to reduce your body’s daily chemical load.

I always encourage women to choose fresh, whole foods whenever possible, drink plenty of filtered water, and avoid heating food in plastic containers.

And then there are the little habits that make life easier.

One product I use every single day is doTERRA Lemon essential oil.

A drop can help remove sticky labels from glass jars, freshen the kitchen sink, brighten homemade cleaning sprays and leave the house smelling wonderfully fresh.

Cleaning without filling your home with chemicals

Have you ever looked under your kitchen sink?

Most homes have a different bottle for every surface. Bathroom cleaner, kitchen cleaner, floor cleaner, glass cleaner. And many of them contain strong synthetic fragrances that linger in the air long after you’ve finished cleaning.

A simpler option is On Guard Cleaner Concentrate. Mixed with water, it becomes an effective everyday cleaner for kitchens, bathrooms, worktops and floors.

Instead of 10 different bottles, I use one concentrate for almost everything.

It’s better for my home, easier to store and leaves behind the warm, comforting aroma of On Guard rather than an overpowering chemical smell. You will find more blends like this in my 50 DIY doTERRA recipes.

Fresh air doesn’t come from an aerosol can

For years, we’ve been taught that a fresh-smelling home comes from aerosol sprays and plug-in fragrances.

I see it differently.

I want my home to smell clean because it is clean.

That’s why I love diffusing essential oils instead. Depending on my mood, I might choose:

  • Wild Orange for an uplifting, sunny atmosphere
  • Lemon for freshness
  • Purify after cooking or when the house needs refreshing
  • Balance to create a calm environment
  • On Guard during the cooler months

Every room feels different depending on the blend, and I know exactly what I’m breathing.

Supporting your hormones naturally

As we move through perimenopause and menopause, our bodies go through enormous changes.

Sleep changes. Mood changes. Energy changes. Stress often feels harder to recover from.

Essential oils won’t replace healthy nutrition, movement or good sleep habits, but they can beautifully support your daily routine. For hormonal support, my favourites are ClaryCalm (on wrists and lower abdomen, morning and evening), Clary Sage for moments of emotional overwhelm, and Frankincense, my longevity oil.

Calm hormones start with a calm nervous system

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that many hormone symptoms are made worse by a nervous system that never gets the chance to switch off.

When we’re constantly rushing, worrying and living under pressure, our bodies struggle to move into rest and repair.

That’s why my evening routine is just as important as my morning one.

Some evenings I diffuse Serenity. Other evenings I prefer the warm, grounding aroma of Copaiba and Frankincense. If I’m in the mood for something woodier, I love Cedarwood or Balance.

There isn’t one perfect oil.

There is only the one that makes you breathe a little more slowly.

Healthy longevity isn’t complicated

People sometimes think living more naturally means changing everything overnight.

It doesn’t. In fact, I recommend exactly the opposite.

Choose one swap this week. Perhaps replace your household cleaner. Next month, choose a natural deodorant. After that, start diffusing essential oils instead of using synthetic air fresheners.

Little by little, your home becomes calmer. Cleaner.

And if you wonder what your body is actually carrying right now, that is something we can measure. An Oberon session shows where your system is putting its energy, so your first swap can be the one that matters most for you.

The oils and cleaning products I mention here are available through my doTERRA page, if you would like to make your first swap.

Common questions

Can household products really affect my hormones?

No single product is likely to be the reason you feel off. The point is the total: Your body processes everything it meets, day after day, and that combined load is what practitioners call your body burden, and the substances behind it are what researchers call endocrine disruptors. After 45, when your body is already recalibrating, lightening that load gives it room to do its real work.

Where should I start if I want a less toxic home?

Pick one room and one swap. I would start under the kitchen sink: Replacing a shelf of synthetic cleaners with one concentrate is the biggest single step, and the easiest. The bathroom comes next, one product at a time as things run out.

Do I have to give up perfume and candles?

You do not have to give up anything overnight. This is about curiosity, not perfection: Read labels, ask questions, and swap when you find something cleaner you love. Small, consistent changes beat a dramatic clear-out that does not last.

How do I know if my body burden is high?

How you feel is the first signal. And it is measurable: In a session we look at what your body is carrying and how strongly it responds, so you start with your own picture instead of a general checklist.
