Menopause Is More Than Hormones: Bones, Heart and Metabolism
The changes after 45 you cannot see, and the foundations that keep you strong: Bones, heart, muscle and metabolism.

Most women expect menopause to bring hot flushes, mood swings and sleepless nights.
What surprises them are the changes they can’t see.
Bone density slowly starts to decline. Cholesterol levels may change. Muscle becomes harder to maintain. Your metabolism slows down, and suddenly the weight around your middle seems to appear overnight.
It can feel frustrating, especially if you’re doing everything you’ve always done.
But here’s the good news.
These changes are not simply something you have to accept. Your body is adapting to a new stage of life, and with the right support, you can continue to feel strong, energetic and healthy for many years to come.
In my practice, I always look at the bigger picture. Healthy longevity isn’t about treating one symptom. It’s about creating a body that functions well as a whole.
That starts with giving your body the right foundations.
Start with a strong foundation
I often compare our body to building a house.
You wouldn’t spend money on beautiful furniture if the foundation was cracking.
The same applies to your health.
Before focusing on hormones or metabolism, I like to make sure the body has the nutrients it needs every single day.
That’s why I often recommend VMG+ as the starting point. It provides a broad spectrum of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant-based nutrients that help support daily energy production, immune function and healthy ageing.
Think of it as giving your cells the building blocks they need to do their job properly.
Looking after your bones
Many women don’t realise that bone loss can begin years before they notice any symptoms.
The scale of it is worth knowing. Bone density falls by about 10% on average across the menopausal transition, and because that is an average, half of all women lose faster: Up to 20% in the 5 to 7 years around menopause. Not one of those percentage points announces itself. That is exactly why this is a habits conversation and not a symptoms conversation.
Because of the natural decline in oestrogen during menopause, bone density can decrease more rapidly, making strength training, good nutrition and adequate calcium and vitamin D even more important.
Alongside these healthy lifestyle habits, I like the Bone Nutrient Essential Complex because it provides nutrients that help support healthy bones, including calcium, magnesium, vitamins C and D, and important trace minerals.
Strong bones aren’t built overnight.
They’re built through consistent daily habits.
Supporting your hormonal transition
Hormones don’t just influence your menstrual cycle.
They affect your bones, your heart, your mood, your muscles and even how your body stores fat.
During menopause, your body is adjusting to a completely new hormonal balance.
The Phytoestrogen Essential Complex contains naturally occurring plant compounds that provide gentle nutritional support during this transition.
I don’t see this as replacing hormones.
I see it as helping to support the body while it’s adapting to a new phase of life.
Don’t forget your heart
One of the biggest health conversations after menopause should be about cardiovascular health.
As oestrogen declines, a woman’s risk of cardiovascular disease gradually increases. That’s why healthy fats become even more important.
I love EO Mega+, which combines omega-3 fish oil with the refreshing flavour of Wild Orange essential oil. Omega-3 fatty acids support heart health, brain function, healthy inflammatory balance and overall cellular wellbeing.
Combined with regular movement, good sleep and a Mediterranean-style way of eating, they become an important part of healthy ageing.
Why metabolism changes after 45
One of the most common questions I hear is:
“Why am I gaining weight when nothing has changed?”
The reality is that things have changed.
Muscle naturally declines with age, hormones influence where we store fat, and stress and poor sleep can make everything even harder.
That’s why I like the MetaPWR range. Not because it’s a weight-loss product, but because it supports healthy metabolism and cellular energy when combined with strength training, enough protein, good sleep and daily movement.
Healthy metabolism isn’t about becoming thinner.
It’s about giving your body the flexibility to produce energy efficiently and remain strong as you age.
My philosophy
People often ask me which supplement is the most important.
My answer is always the same.
There isn’t one.
Supplements work best when they’re supporting a healthy lifestyle, not replacing one. That means:
- Eating enough protein
- Strength training at least 2 or 3 times a week
- Walking every day
- Drinking enough water
- Prioritising sleep
- Managing stress
- Spending time outdoors
- Supporting your body with quality nutrition
The products simply help strengthen those foundations. And because every body is different, I prefer to measure where your body needs support before recommending anything.
Healthy ageing is a daily choice
Growing older is inevitable.
Feeling old is not.
Every healthy meal, every walk, every strength-training session and every positive habit is an investment in the woman you will become over the next 20 or 30 years.
For me, that’s what healthy longevity is really about.
Not chasing youth.
Because your best years don’t have to be behind you. In many ways, they may only just be beginning.
The supplements I mention are available through my doTERRA page, alongside the lifestyle habits that make them work.
Common questions
Which changes after menopause should I take most seriously?
The quiet ones: Bone density, cardiovascular health and muscle mass. They shift gradually and without symptoms, which is exactly why daily habits (protein, strength training, walking, sleep) matter more than any single product.
Do I need supplements after 45?
Supplements support a healthy lifestyle, they never replace one. Many women eat reasonably well and still miss key nutrients, which is where a foundation like VMG+ can help. But the order matters: Lifestyle first, targeted support second, and ideally measured rather than guessed.
Why am I gaining weight when nothing has changed?
Because things have changed, just not in your habits: Muscle declines with age, hormones shift where fat is stored, and stress and lighter sleep slow everything down. The answer is not eating less of the same, but building muscle, eating enough protein and giving your metabolism the support it needs.
